Book your Trip now with River Rafters

A Short History Overview

We at The River Rafters have not been there at the start of the company. The Orange River White Water Rafting operations started in 1985. The original pioneers were Hugh Tucker from Aquatrails (then River Runners), Ross Murray (The River Rafters) and Felix Unite (Felix Unite Tourism group). A picture of these pioneers are still on show to this day at the Aquatrails office of Hugh Tucker. Many companies have started operations on the river, but only a handful of these are still operational. In November of 2004, Paul Rode bought The River Rafters.
Paul started his Orange River white water rafting business in 1994. The then aim was to pay for his studies as student at University of Stellenbosch. After his degree, he worked 4 months for PWC before resigning to follow his newly discovered dream. His aim changed from paying for studies to offering value for money experiences on the Orange River with a high safety record. Understandably the safety record of any rafting company is one of the most important factors to consider when booking a rafting trip. The River Rafters, under Paul, has to date had no accidents caused by rafting. Ironically, we’ve had 2 broken arms, one by toothbrush and the other by cooler box, and one badly damaged nose and ear, caused by a rugby ball.

We are committed to developing the community around us and 90% of our workers and guides are local to Southern Namibia. They have been brought up on the banks of the Gariep (Orange River) and can tell you many interesting facts about their home.

The River Rafters also believes in keeping the river and river banks clean of dumping. Through the years we have conducted a couple of rafting excursions with our guides to clean the river and river banks and to remove rubbish. The River Rafters has a zero tolerance for dumping trash. We also do not allow any glass to go onto the river. Guests are expected to leave Namibia as they found it. This way you will ensure that the next person will experience Namibia as the absolutely beautiful jewel that it is.
